For artists who pursue academic accreditation, a Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA) is considered a terminal degree since the PhD has not yet established itself for studio art in Canadian universities. After celebrating the accomplishment of completing any degree, what comes next? In Just Graduated? Now What?, two recent MFA graduates  reflect on the expectations versus realities of their experiences, and share how they’ve begun to find opportunity and community post-grad: Brody Burns graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and Mohammad Abbassi graduated from the University of Alberta. The two 25 minute presentations will be followed by a thirty-minute Q&A period, where we look forward to hearing your questions on this topic.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR
Brody Burns will discuss his experiences as a self-employed, up-and-coming artist as well as some of the difficulties he has encountered. Artists have access to a variety of resources, including grants, artist-run facilities, online business tools and networking possibilities.

Mohammad Abbasi will discuss his experience as a recent immigrant to Canada and the difficulties of navigating through his own cultural narrative while simultaneously deciphering mysteries of a new environment.  As a painter from Iran, Mohammad will describe the burden of self-censorship  while dealing with the complex interplay of political and religious factors that formed his upbringing.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Brody Burns recently received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (2021) and Master of Fine Arts (2023) from the University of Saskatchewan. Brody belongs to the Treaty 6 Territory of the James Smith Cree Nation. He presently maintains a studio at AKA/Paved Arts and resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Brody is a painter first and foremost, with a focus on expressive figurative art infused with indigenous knowledge and spirituality, as well as abstract energy. 

Mohammad Abbasi  holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alberta. He has been residing in this country for approximately three years. Through painting, Mohammad explores the evolving identity of the Middle East diaspora. His art practice is a conversation about transformation and landscape, pertaining both to the idea of Home and of Self. As an immigrant, his work seeks to navigate ‘The Third Space’ as experienced by diasporic populations, and negotiate what are the boundaries - what is ‘safe’?

What is CARFAC?
As the national voice of Canada’s professional visual artists, Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC) defends artists’ economic and legal rights and educates the public on fair dealing with artists. In doing so, CARFAC promotes a socio-economic climate conducive to the production of visual arts. CARFAC engages actively in advocacy, lobbying, research and public education on behalf of artists in Canada.

Who is April Britski?
April Britski is the Executive Director of CARFAC, Canada’s national association for visual artists. She has worked and volunteered as an arts administrator since 1998, and joined the staff of CARFAC National in 2005. She is a co-founder of Artists’ Legal Services Ottawa and the Visual Arts Alliance, and she has served on several boards of cultural policy and artist-run organizations. April’s primary responsibility at CARFAC is the development and implementation of organizational policies and strategies related to artists’ legal and economic rights. She is actively involved in the research, development, and coordination of advocacy efforts, including CARFAC’s Artist’s Resale Right campaign. She assists with negotiating collective agreements for visual and media artists under the Status of the Artist Act, as well as other national voluntary agreements with presenters. Originally from Saskatchewan, April currently resides on the traditional unceded territories of the Coast Salish Nations including the Kwikwetlem, Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh, and Tsleil-Waututh Peoples.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This ceramics workshop, led by CARFAC SASK’s 2023-2024 Travelling Mentor, will include: discussion of clay, ceramics processes, and how utility and cultural context unite in a completed ceramic work, acquainting yourself with a clay body to discover its working qualities, a group sculpture activity, and demonstration and hands-on handbuilt platter making.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR
Michael will speak about their experience with creating collectives and the role that collectives fill in the arts sector, as an alternative to more hierarchical models. Through exploring their past work, they will offer practical tips to start your own collective or collaboration. They will also speak to a variety of models that exist in Canada and share their experience collaborating with international collectives through their collective YTB.

Holly will reflect on centering collective-building and experimentation through her ongoing engagement with collectives. As an emerging artist, practicing in collaboration has offered a support network and has led to invaluable opportunities and personal growth for her as an artist.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
MICHAEL MAGNUSSEN I am an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and community builder originally from rural Saskatchewan and now based out of Edmonton, Alberta. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from OCAD University in Ontario and a BFA from Concordia University in Quebec in Studio Arts. I am the co-founder and collective member of YTB Gallery, a nomadic artist-run center for emerging artists and curators founded in Toronto in 2014.

HOLLY AUBICHON (she/her)  investigates topics of urban Indigeneity and how ancestral knowledge ​reaches​ urban Indigenous people through ​memories;​​ land, and body. Her practice includes painting, writing and curation. She identifies as Métis, Cree ​from her Paternal side, ​and Ukrainian, Irish, and Scottish ancestry​ from her Maternal side. Aubichon was​ born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. Her Indigenous relations come from Meadow Lake, Green Lake and Lestock, SK. Aubichon’s practice is laboriously reliant on retracing familial memories and connections.  She graduated from the University of Regina in 2021 with a BFA, minoring in Indigenous Art History. Aubichon was the Saskatchewan recipient of the 2021 BMO 1st Art! Award. Aubichon is the current Artistic Director for Sâkêwêwak Artists’ Collective Inc​.​

Dwayne Martineau has scored hundreds of grant applications and has studied what makes an application sink or swim. He's seen good proposals go sour for reasons as small as a hard drive. He will be sharing simple tips and strategies that will help you successfully tell your story to a grants jury, avoid red flags, and keep your application away from the NO pile.
 
For Nic Wilson, a budget tells a story. It can create confidence in your grant application or it can raise alarm bells. In this session, they will talk about how to present a well-balanced grant budget, how to use it once you begin your project, and how to report on your activities, expenses, and financial outcomes. They will discuss the difference between in-kind support, personal contributions, and grant requests with an emphasis on individual artists grants.

DWAYNE MARTINEAU is an artist, musician, writer and photographer based in Edmonton. Winner of the 2022 Edmonton Visual Arts Prize and recipient of the Edmonton Artists Trust Fund Award in 2017 and 2021. His band The Hearts has performed across Canada, showcased at SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin, had a #1 record on CKUA Radio, and songs featured on HBO and MTV.

NIC WILSON (they/he) is an artist and writer who was born in the Wolastoqiyik territory known as Fredericton, NB in 1988. They are now based on Treaty Four Land in oskana ka-asastēki/Regina, SK where they earned an MFA from the University of Regina. They have worked as a board member and administrative director with several arts organizations and currently serve as the Chair of the board for Neutral Ground Artist Run Centre.

Artwork that extends beyond the gallery space into public space creates landmarks that shape the very feeling of a place, whether it be authorized as part of an official commission or approached from a DIY philosophy. Outdoor artworks such as murals sometimes reference the history of a place, but always engage in future place-making be it for the short-term or long-term.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR
The webinar Taking Art Outside: the Politics of Cities feature presentations by two visual artists whose art practice brings their work outside. Lonigan Gilbert glues and nails small art pieces to fences, walls, whatever. He does not ask permission, as the city landscape presents as his venue. Geanna Dunbar is responsible for multiple public art projects in Regina. This past summer, Geanna Dunbar was one of the artists that saw hundreds of painted ‘beads’ forming a walkable “Pathway to Reconciliation” on the brickwork of Scarth Street.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
LONIGAN GILBERT
Currently living and working in amiskwaciywaskahikan (Edmonton) in Treaty 6 territory, Lonigan Gilbert is a multidisciplinary artist. Gilbert is a member of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Treaty 5 territory and grew up in Winnipeg. He uses pop culture references in his artwork and is not scared of bringing politics into his art. His art deals with city life and living in an urban world.

GEANNA DUNBAR
Living and working in Regina, Geanna Dunbar is a Cree-Metis entrepreneur and visual artist.  As an entrepreneur, Dunbar does tattooing and body piercings. As a visual artist, she works in mixed media, sculpture, painting, murals, street art and more. She has taken her work to the streets of Regina creating a 300 foot walkway called "The Path to Reconciliation."

For 40 years CARFAC SASK has represented visual artists in Saskatchewan and provided perspective on issues affecting the making of art, artists rights, intellectual property rights and the status of the artist within our society. In celebration of CARFAC SASK’s anniversary, we look forward to exploring this legacy by directing focus to the presence of artificial intelligence in evolving creative processes. On November 25, innovative panelists will present on their personal art/work, speaking to their personal artistic voice in relation to generative AI systems; followed by a discussion between panelists and attendees. In an interdisciplinary arts sector full of unique artistic voices, how do we specify artificial intelligence’s impact on visual artists, and what should future legislation that defends the rights of artists look like?

ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Lawyer, certified mediator, and inter-arts curator, VALENTINE GODDARD is a member of the AI Advisory Council of Canada, and a United Nations expert on AI policy and governance. In 2017, she founded and is the executive director of AI Impact Alliance, an organisation whose mission is to facilitate a responsible governance of AI and steer its use towards the achievement of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It is recognized by the Conseil des arts de Montréal as a digital arts research organisation. She designs and leads transdisciplinary programs that bridge civic engagement and knowledge mobilisation to policy and regulatory innovation. The Art Impact AI programs led to the adoption of international policies that highlight the role of the arts and civil society in AI and digital governance. She is regularly invited to take part in the analysis of emerging AI and data laws and discuss the impact of generative AI. She initiated and co-chairs the Gender Equality and the Environment in Digital Economies international expert group whose policy recommendations address critical issues for the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and sustainable natural resource data governance. In 2023, she was awarded the Mozilla Creative Media Award for “Algorithmic (or not) Art to Counter Gender, Cultural and Racial Bias in AI”. She is currently leading the Art Impact AI Coalition, a petition signed by almost 2000 stakeholders and experts advocating to have artists at the table on the regulation of generative AI. 

RYAN HILL, a media artist from Regina, Saskatchewan, is a creative force in the world of digital art. With a diverse skill set that encompasses 3D graphics, music, projection mapping, virtual reality, and experimental sound, he blurs the lines between technology and artistry. His innovative photogrammetry projects and captivating multichannel audio performances transport audiences to otherworldly realms. Ryan is a developer at Flipside XR, a company pioneering VR software for recording and presenting performances, opening up new horizons for artistic expression. The app he develops has recently incorporated AI as part of the creative process. His work challenges the norm, inviting us to explore the infinite possibilities of creativity in the digital age. QUINN HOPKINS (he/him) is inspired by new, innovative technologies, connecting them with the land and his roots as an Anishinaabe person. He utilizes techniques such as 3D modelling, digital drawing, editing, creative coding and machine learning; Hopkins collaborates with the computer to research, design and create his artworks. His interests are focused on developing new ways to visualize the spirit of the land to reveal the many truths about humanity’s relationship with the land.

SHANELL PAPP maintains her research-based studio practice. Working primarily in textiles/sculpture and in photography, video, drawing, and AI. Exhibited widely, viral online, published in multiple textbooks, and foreign art books, interviewed multiple times by the CBC, and featured in Ripleys Believe it or not. The work leverages the ubiquitous of textiles in every area of life, to draw quick references to labour and history. Papp holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan and is currently working towards an MLIS degree at the UofA.

The webinar Making Murals is composed of two presentations. We start with a presentation by Mural Routes (a non profit organization out of Toronto) who will outline how they mentor and train artists and communities on what murals can do. As an organization dedicated to murals, they have established many Best Practices on how to make murals. The second presentation is by Carla Rae Taylor, an Edmonton visual artists and storyteller that has recently started coordinating mural creations in Edmonton and Yellowknife.

Marta Keller-Hernandez, Managing Director
Originally from Spain, Marta Keller-Hernandez holds Degrees in Tourism and Humanities, a
Masters in Social Media Marketing from the University of Alicante (Spain), and a Graduate Certificate in Culture and Heritage Site Management from Centennial College. In Toronto, Marta has worked with a wide range of arts and culture organizations such as Black Artists’ Networks Dialogue, Latin American Canadian Art Projects and Sur Gallery, Heritage Toronto, and Art Starts. Also, Marta is the co-founder of Paralia Newcomer Arts Network, the recipient of the Newcomer and Refugee Artist Mentorship grant in the capacity of mentor and a Toronto Arts Council 2018 Leaders Lab fellow.

Kim Dayman, Program + Project Coordinator
Kim is an artist, arts manager and advocate across the GTA for the past 20 years. She holds a BFA from OCAD University and has pursued continuing education through Toronto Metropolitan University in Non-profit Management. Throughout her career she has worked for award winning organizations such as Lakeshore Arts, Art Starts and the Living Arts Centre. Kim strongly believes in mentorship, volunteering, and advocacy and has held positions at Humber College’s VADA Program Advisory Committee and with Arts Vote Toronto. In addition, she is also an accomplished community engaged artist having programmed and facilitated exhibitions, festivals and workshops for groups large and small. As an artist she is a mixed media printmaker formerly with the inPrint Collective and has showcased her work in galleries and taken part in residencies across Ontario.

Carla Rae Taylor
Carla Rae Taylor was born in St. Albert AB and raised in Yellowknife NT. She is of both Dene and Irish/French heritage. Carla completed a BFA at the University of Victoria along with a Certificate in Graphic Design from the Pacific Design Academy , also in Victoria. Having spent much of her youth and young adulthood close to nature, she learned to listen deeply and be in touch with intuition and creativity. Both the natural world and the dream world have inspired the creations within the borders of her paintings. More recently, she has been creating large scale murals and illustrating children's books. ABOUT SPEKWORK STUDIO
SpekWork Studio (Cat Bluemke and Jonathan Carroll) will share their practice in new media technology, providing insights into the creation, coding, fabrication and other “behind-the-scenes” knowledge that serves to demystify generative artwork and digital media-based work. The artists will address attempting sustainable practices in digital art and bridge the perceived gap between electronics and the natural world.

ABOUT CAT BLUEMKE AND JONATHAN CARROLL
Cat Bluemke and Jonathan Carroll make art about work and play. Taking form as video games, performance, and expanded reality, their projects consider how technology regulates both labour and leisure. They have worked together since 2013, often as the collectives SpekWork Studio and Tough Guy Mountain. As SpekWork, they develop video games, virtual and augmented reality, and mobile applications that explore the connections between the subject of the user, worker, and player. They are currently based on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, in Mi’kma’ki.

Speaking from the knowledge acquired as the Public Arts Consultant for the City of Saskatoon, Alejandro Romero will discuss how Public Art is used by municipalities to enrich the lives of its’ citizens. Alejandro will outline the Best Practices developed that protect both the city that commissions the work and the visual artists that make the work. Erin Pankratz and Christian Pérès Gibaut work together on Public Art projects in Edmonton. In their presentation, they will discuss what to expect when making public art, the unseen side of the process, and Public Art and your career.

ABOUT ALEJANDRO ROMERO
Living in Saskatoon, Alejandro Romero is an independent interdisciplinary artist, curator, and consultant. His leadership as an arts administrator includes award-winning Public Art, public performances, lectures, and public speaking. He is the Public Arts Consultant for the City of Saskatoon, Alejandro exhibits in Puerto Rico, USA and Canada. His work explore anonymous interventions, social activism, cultural resistance, photography, painting and poetry with the concepts of identity, post-colonialism, prophecy, construction and perceptions of reality.

ABOUT RED KNOT STUDIO
Red Knot Studio is Erin Pankratz’ and Christian Pérès Gibaut’s mosaic art studio. Based in Edmonton, they specialize in sculptures, murals and floors, and work with public and private clients. For their last project, they created child-friendly sculptures for Churchill Square and Centennial Plaza in Edmonton.

ABOUT ERIN PANKRATZ
Born in Inuvik, NWT, Erin Pankratz lives and works in Edmonton, AB. She studied Art -Sculpture at the Alberta College of Art and Design and has received several grants and awards, including the 2013 & 2016 Innovation in Mosaics Awards by the Society of American Mosaic Artists and the 2021 Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund. In 2016, she became the first local artist to be awarded an International Public Art Call in Edmonton. She is a frequent lecturer and guest artist at international events.

ABOUT CHRISTIAN PÉRÈS GIBAUT
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Christian Pérès Gibaut has a BA in Social Sciences and Humanities. He worked for many years as a Project Manager before starting a career in the arts in 2011. He has been awarded several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Edmonton Arts Council to explore ideas of Identity, Immigration, Language, Meaning, and Estrangement. He shows his work regularly, and in 2022, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts acquired one of his paintings for its permanent collection.

ABOUT HEATHER CLINE
Heather Cline has a MFA from the University of Saskatchewan and is a painter and mixed media artist based in Regina, Saskatchewan. Cline has a deep interest in public interaction, and has exhibited widely, participating in residency programs and public engagement across Canada.
