Artwork that extends beyond the gallery space into public space creates landmarks that shape the very feeling of a place, whether it be authorized as part of an official commission or approached from a DIY philosophy. Outdoor artworks such as murals sometimes reference the history of a place, but always engage in future place-making be it for the short-term or long-term.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR
The webinar Taking Art Outside: the Politics of Cities feature presentations by two visual artists whose art practice brings their work outside. Lonigan Gilbert glues and nails small art pieces to fences, walls, whatever. He does not ask permission, as the city landscape presents as his venue. Geanna Dunbar is responsible for multiple public art projects in Regina. This past summer, Geanna Dunbar was one of the artists that saw hundreds of painted ‘beads’ forming a walkable “Pathway to Reconciliation” on the brickwork of Scarth Street.
After these two presentations, there will be a thirty-minute Q+A based on your questions. As the webinar is on Zoom, we will unmute the audience so you can ask your own questions. Join us and learn more about taking your art to the streets.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
LONIGAN GILBERT
Currently living and working in amiskwaciywaskahikan (Edmonton) in Treaty 6 territory, Lonigan Gilbert is a multidisciplinary artist. Gilbert is a member of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Treaty 5 territory and grew up in Winnipeg. He uses pop culture references in his artwork and is not scared of bringing politics into his art. His art deals with city life and living in an urban world.

GEANNA DUNBAR
Living and working in Regina, Geanna Dunbar is a Cree-Metis entrepreneur and visual artist.  As an entrepreneur, Dunbar does tattooing and body piercings. As a visual artist, she works in mixed media, sculpture, painting, murals, street art and more. She has taken her work to the streets of Regina creating a 300 foot walkway called "The Path to Reconciliation."
